Here’s something I felt the Lord speak to me as I was in the mall waiting for my daughter. I felt that He was telling me that this is where He will have church. If you remember, Jesus held church many times in the marketplace. We as a body have limited God and put Him in a box called church . However , the very walls that are used to contain and support the church structure are the same that keeps those on the outside who would like to come in from so doing . I had a dream about this where I saw a church with glass doors and I could see insider the church where people were really worshiping the Lord . However, the doors of the church had no handles to be let in, you had to be let in from the inside, and, if someone left, they could only be let in by someone who was on the inside .The church has become more our sanctuary away from a hurting and dying word than it is God’s . In John 1:14 it says ,” And the word became flesh and dwelt (tented, encamp, specifically to reside ) Jesus I believe set the model for us all to follow which is to dwell among the people . And to be effective , the word must be made flesh . It is interesting to note that the first dwelling place was a tent made with hands and the second ,of which Jesus is the prototype and includes us , is made without hands . A tent is mobile it is not meant to be stationary . In Numbers 9:17 it says , ” And when the cloud was taken up from the tent(tabernacle) the sons of Israel pulled up stakes. And the place where the cloud stayed , there they pitched their tents .” The point is that God lived in a tent just as His people did and thus He dwelt among them . The church today is stationary and unmovable and is therefore not in a position to pull up stakes and follow the cloud at the Lord’s command . 1Cor 3:16 says that we are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells within us . This temple is not made with hands . The difference between a church made of brick & mortar as opposed to one made up of tents is :
A tent is mobile , brick & mortar are not
A tent cannot be locked thus it cannot deny people access , brick & mortar can .
A tent can be stretched and lengthened , with brick & mortar it can Be done but is much more difficult .
A tent is easily made and is very inexpensive to maintain , brick & mortar takes much more to build and is costly to maintain .
A tent can Be pitched pretty much anywhere , brick & mortar can’t .
A tent is not used to store junk but to shelter people and moving from place to place is not a big issue . Brick & mortar can store a lot but is not mobile .
Tenting is roughing it as you do not have all the creature comforts . Brick & mortar offer creature comforts but make the individual dwelling within selfish , and lazy .
While we all are looking one day to have a permanent dwelling , today we must follow the cloud , the Shekinah Glory of God’s presence , or we will find ourselves lost in the desert . =
